Lime Street
by Formworks Architecture

IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS

Lime Street is located in East Perth, on a space constrained block adjoining railway tracks, a highway and a car park. The seven storey facility provides an innovative new form of continual care for Perth's homeless, where crisis, transitional, long term and aged care accommodation are housed within the same building, and clients move from one accommodation type to the next while remaining part of the same community. To create this community the building is designed around an internal street, with the usual north-south configuration of such buildings turned 90 degrees. In this way, sunlight favours not individual units, but the shared

walkways, courtyards and roof-top gardens where residents like to gather. There are no corridors, with their deadening institutional feel; instead open, sun-lit walkways allow shouted conversations and laughter to float between different parts of the building. Lime Street’s cafe, hairdresser and podiatrist are positioned along the street, while a generously proportioned and secure entry point leads directly onto the internal street. The emphasis here is on safe connections and a sense of community; the aim is to build not an institution, or even a series of dwellings, but to lay the foundations for a socially sustainable “village”.
