Roma Mitchell Commonwealth Law Courts Adelaide

The Commonwealth Law Courts at Victoria Square has become the new focal point for the legal profession in Adelaide. The ground floor of the building contains a public entry/security screening facility, Family Courts of Australia public information service, administrative offices and a secure public courtyard. The first to fifth floors on the north side of the building are double height spaces and house courtrooms, a mediation suite and public concourse facilities. The second to fourth floors on the southern side of the building contain administration, file processing and public interview spaces. A secure car park, maintenance storage and prisoner holding facilities, receiving natural light through a high-level window, are located in the basement. The upper seven floors on the building

are occupied by chambers, conference facilities and libraries. A strong connection between the exterior and interior is expressed in the building forms continuing from inside out. The interior design is integral to the architectural design. Two impressive atriums link five floors of the building, encouraging social interaction between visitors and practitioners. The western atrium is a dramatic sculptural space with a 27metre high central column. The use of natural Australian materials respects local context, providing a sense of calm and an atmosphere that enables long periods of concentration without tension. The ceremonial courts building is clad in green copper sheeting and aligns with the centre of Victoria Square sensitively acknowledging the Kaurna presence in Adelaide.
