James Street Market
by Cox Rayner Architects

IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS

The James Street Market explores new typologies for urban shopping. The concept aims to blur the boundaries between ‘public' and ‘retail' space by coalescing the idioms of the traditional market ‘shed' and the ‘shopping street'. The market consists of three buildings located along a pedestrian street. This street comprises approximately equal areas of public space and retail space, the two merging along the line of a cross-axial spine linked to carparking. The dissolution of edges is reinforced by sliding walls and vertical concertina walls along the spine. The external faces of the markets explore different ways to engage

the street, bringing outside in and vice versa. Treatments include breezeways, uninterrupted glazing and insertions of sliding window boxes. The mosaic tiling is part of a strategy of linking elements, its miniature scale contrasted with the scale of the exposed structure which equally expresses repetitive discipline. The roof planes shear off each other to permit light penetration and air flow, while retaining the identity of one contiguous market space. Colour is restricted to black, white, timber and grey (concrete) to accentuate the fresh produce and shoppers themselves as interactive elements.
