IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS

Commissioned by the City of Melville via a qualification based submission on a limited competition basis, ECOTECT-ARCHITECT (formerly Baverstock Murphy & Associates), designed this building to be a state of the art "autonomous" building and utilise as many environmental systems as a demonstration to the public (refer to brochure attached). The 2-storey Environmental Education Centre of 850m2 (including covered areas), is built to a brief prepared in consultation with environment and community groups. The Rotary Club of Melville were the catalyst for raising seed capital and initiating this project, in conjunction with the City of Melville. The project is a demonstration of sustainability for
 
 

educational establishments and ideas for housing design. The building serves as a focal point for environmental education for school groups and the general public. The building functions as: · Information service to the public · School groups and University education · A research centre for Murdoch University · A venue for seminars and conferences · A venue for social events · A demonstration of practical environment technology for remote areas (sewage, grey water, water harvesting etc.) · Demonstration of Wind and Solar power systems · The “jewel in the crown” for the Piney Lakes bush rehabilitation, wetlands and wildlife preservation programme. · A maintenance centre for the reserve
