Marion Cultural Centre

IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS

The Marion Cultural Centre is an initiative of the Marion City Council to provide a new library, art gallery and performance space for the municipality. The project began life as a very grand theatre complex which included Council Offices, transformed into a new generation information centre/commercial development, but is realised as a 2500 sqm community facility. This transmogrification indicates the ambition for the project. It was intended to be something that would carry the pride and hope of the local arts community; something that would stand strongly

in the community; something that has a commitment to a positive future. In short, the Council created the idea for the facility in the spirit of education and contribution that created our 19th century institutions, like regional libraries and mechanics institutes. Its site is on land which was part of a Council development project adjacent to the gargantuan Marion Westfield shopping centre. Our commission was to masterplan the location, to redefine what would be possible as a new generation cultural complex and deliver that facility. This was a courageous client.
