Shelley Penn

Each year the incoming President of the Institute is invited to the US to be recognised by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as an honorary member. I had the privilege of travelling to Washington to receive this recognition a couple of weeks ago. It was wonderful to learn a little of how the AIA operates; to witness its size and complexity, and to be welcomed by its generous representatives. Read more..

David Parken

On behalf of the Institute, I welcome Shelley Penn to the role of National President and offer her my committed support through the course of the next 12 months.

We covered the conference in some detail in last month's e-news, but I would like to point to an event of particular significance that took place. Read more...

CONSULTATION POLICY - A STRONGER VOICE FOR MEMBERS

The Institute's National Council is committed to strengthening our effectiveness through better consultation, particularly with members. A working group has been established to direct a thorough appraisal of current processes in order to develop a detailed communications and consultation policy.

The working group comprises representatives from membership and staff and includes Matthew Pullinger (NSW Chapter President), Emma Cayley (Manager, Communications and Marketing), Ross Clark (Chief Operating Officer) and Shelley Penn (National President). The group is also being advised and assisted by Elton Consulting, an independent specialist in communication and consultation. This article published in March e-news provides a bit more information about the project.

It is hoped that the policy will strengthen the Institute's effectiveness through better consultation, particularly with members. This new policy will be recommended to National Council for adoption in August and will then guide the appropriate approach to consultation on all key Institute issues.

The first stage in developing the foundation of the policy was to send out a survey to all members. Many thanks to those of you who took the time to participate. Your response was strong and largely positive; though it is clear there is much we can do to improve the quality of consultation with members.

Click here for a summary of the results. These results will inform the development of the Institute's new Consultation Policy.

A member reference group has just been established and will convene for the first time in a couple of weeks. The group comprises members from each chapter and represents a cross section of membership types and interests. The main purpose of the group is to offer feedback on the draft policy as it evolves. The group will have direct input into the development of the policy, testing ideas and approaches along the way.

If you have any ideas, questions or comments, please email them to consult@architecture.com.au.

GRAND DESIGNS AUSTRALIA – LAST EPISODE TONIGHT!
Michael EllisSteels Creek Earth House
Thu 7 Jun 8.30pm

Grand Designs Australia showcases the most compelling of homes and features the work of many Institute members. Series Two has revealed the personal stories behind the projects that have involved the following: Maria Gigney Architects, Duncan Sanby and Utz Sanby, Grant Amon Architects, Mark Granger and Chris Van Dyke Designs, Alvyn Williams and Soft Loud Architects, and Michael Ellis.

Tonight’s episode, the final of the series, tells the story of Edd and Amanda who lost everything when bushfires swept through Steels Creek. Determined to stay with the land they love, they're building a concrete bunker embedded in the landscape with one side facing the outside world. Episode 10: Steels Creek Earth House

Series Two of Grand Designs Australia marked the launch of the Institute's 2012 marketing campaign for Find an Architect. Traffic to the site increased markedly with the screening of each episode. Read more …

NONCOMPLIANT WINDOW SYSTEMS

This article is published courtesy of the Australian Windows Association (AWA) and the CFMEU

The collapse of St Hilliers Construction group last month and the subsequent Ararat prison site closure highlights the increasing problem of the purchase and installation of noncompliant window systems across this country.

Victorian CFMEU State Secretary, Bill Oliver, spoke to Tracey Gramlick of the AWA and confirmed the issue is significant. He quoted the growing number of overseas window suppliers approaching building sites directly and offering products at prices much lower than offered by local manufacturers who bear the costs of testing to standards and conforming to minimum BCA requirements. These building standards are crucial to the integrity of Australia's building stock. Read more …
