Ameera Residences Sales Gallery
by YHSA

IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS

Serving as the sales centre for a residential development being built on the adjacent site, the project comprises two major components – the sales gallery, and the enclosure of the show units. These, together with the car park, are arranged linearly, the whole composition stitched together by a distinct axis. To imbue identity, the Sales Gallery is expressed as a blue glass box, while the Show Units are housed in a translucent metal-louvred box. A long, floating canopy marks the axis and the passage between the components. The streetfront is presented as a series of screens in varying degrees of opacity : the open steel trellis serving as a sun filter cum screening device to the transparent glass box, a solid signage wall, and a perforated masonry wall. The axis itself is a story of movement and sight. Light, texture, and sounds are composed in an ever-changing linear progression, depending on the visitor’s position relative to the site and program. The main architectural palette is kept simple and direct: concrete-faced walls, steel trellises, glass, and perforated metal louvers – all presented in the blue and grey of the client’s corporate colours. These elements run concurrently between the exteriors and interiors, coaxing the primary axis to pulsate spatially as it progresses. The landscaping further emphasizes this intent. Flora from the exterior beds also appear indoors as do water features and the terrazzo hardscape. Two components , a Glass Box and a Metal Box, become vessels of shadow and light, silence and sound, drama and calm - the interweave of lightness, solidity and ethereality

making the highlight of the project. Located along a neighbourhood street consisting predominantly of double storey residences, the scale of the building was kept to a single storey, partly to avoid alarming the residents who had gotten used to having an open space in front of their homes. However, the frontage was stretched along 90m of the site for maximum advertising presence - effectively, an extended billboard. Four large existing trees between the site and the street were maintained and helped the building nestle comfortably within the setting. The building has an intended limited lifespan of 3 years, to facilitate the sales of the main development over three phases. While the overall building will remain intact throughout, the show units themselves, built within a column-free covered platform will be repeatedly replaced, according to the sales progress of the various phases. Apart from the bondek floor slab, the structure is constructed primarily from off-the-shelf steel members. Due to the limited lifespan, the material was selected from consideration of speed of construction and ease of dismantling. The standard-sized members can be easily salvaged and recycled for use elsewhere. The final design was only realized through close collaboration between the primary designers – the architects, interior, landscape and lighting designers and even the engineers worked in tandem to interpret the brief and integrate the various elements instead of designing their respective parts independently. The result, is the exceptional interweave of elements and experiences highlighted before.
