   -   The Australian Institute of Architects Award for Residential Architecture - Houses (VIC)

Kyneton House
by John Wardle Architects

IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS

This house on a vineyard in country Victoria has a simple plan, and a complex roof. This roof is what is seen from the distant approach. It creates a silhouette, a geometric landscape floating within the expansive rural setting. The house is approached from a long driveway that winds around the back to a rear courtyard. This contemplative space creates a pause before a view of tree-covered hills to the north is revealed on entry. Only a narrow vertical slot in the blank wall gives a preview glimpse, like a core-sample of the view. Once inside, floor to ceiling glass connects the main living space with the landscape. The floating roof defines this space. Otherwise flat, it is cut and folded up to form skylights, or cut and folded down to create shade to the north. The incised plane hovers above the roof level of the rest of the house, the gap between ceiling and walls made up with glass. The plan is divided

into three zones, or pavilions. The garage is connected to the guest pavilion, which provides bedroom and study/office functions. A narrow corridor leads down a flight of steps to the main living pavilion, which is in turn subtly disconnected from the principal bedroom wing. Planning is spare, and straightforward. Floors are a smooth polished concrete screed, with timber to outdoor living areas. The only piece of joinery that strays from rectilinear simplicity is a unit surrounding a wood-fired heater. The fireplace system has its steel workings exposed, normally intended to be covered, but its industrial character appreciated and exposed to view. The fireplace is supported on a folded steel plate that returns on itself, enfolding stacked hardwood blocks that form the structural support for a pile of firewood. This centrepiece to the living area provides an explanatory maquette for the diagram of this building.
