Lavarack Barracks Redevelopment Stage 2 - Living-In Accommodation
by Bligh Voller Nield (QLD) and Troppo Architects (Qld)

IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS

A major component of the Lavarack Barracks Stage 2 Redevelopment was the provision of 1,112 new Living in Accommodation units. Three distinct residential precincts were planned, with clustered groups of 30-42 units in each. The clusters aim to develop a sense of community through their location, scale and massing. Their arrangement is irregular to enhance principles of orientation, natural ventilation and passive energy design. They are sited

to respect and respond to site axes, views, climate and landscape features, such as creeks, lagoons, mature trees and the towering backdrop of Mt Stuart. The sheer scale of the project and tight programme provided the opportunity to build from almost entirely off-site prefabricated components. From walls to joinery and entire bathroom modules, the prefabricated components, manufactured in low maintenance materials, were erected by crane.
